Why Consider Using a Compounded Medication?

The pharmaceutical industry provides a variety of mass produced medications that help treat numerous health conditions.  A majority of the time these products help patients reach treatment goals.  However, some patients do not respond favorably to standard treatment and may require a more personalized approach to their care.  Compounded medications offer the flexibility in prescribing to help solve unique patient problems.  A compounded product may be a reasonable option under the following circumstances:

  • Patient non-adherence due to unpleasant side effects, pill burden, difficulty using prescribed formulation, or palatability issues
  • Avoidance of unwanted side effects (drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, upset stomach, constipation)
  • Changing organ function (renal/hepatic/GI) requiring a different dosage form
  • Specific drug strength or formation (tablet, liquid, topical creams/ointments, suppository) is needed
  • Commercial product is not available due to back order or has been taken off the market
  • Need to eliminate an ingredient that patient has an allergy or sensitivity to and may not tolerate
  • Need for a less invasive formulation (i.e. using topical cream vs. injection)
